BCS Championship: Day 2

While the rest of the team had some time to sleep and grab breakfast before team meetings, day two got underway bright and early for a few of the defensive players and coordinator Bob Diaco.

Zeke Motta, Kapron Lewis-Moore, Danny Spond and Matthias Farley spoke with the media at the Harbor Beach Marriott, the BCS championship media headquarters. In the conference room next door, Diaco and Manti Te’o had a press conference for about 45 minutes.

But before getting into more about Notre Dame’s day two activities, here’s a look at Fighting Irish Digital Media’s latest video updates, brought to you by our friends at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center. The first features a closer look at defensive lineman and Miami Heat superfan Louis Nix channeling his inner Psy. The other video features footage from last night’s Florida Sports National Championship Welcome Reception at the team hotel.

Now, on to the press conference….

Among the things we learned, Te’o is #5 because when his dad asked what number he wanted to wear, he was five years old. At the time, it was an easy choice for the senior. Linebackers cannot wear #5 in the NFL, so I’m curious to see what he’ll choose next year.

While Te’o's reason for wearing #5 is funny, fellow linebacker Danny Spond also has a story behind his number, and it seriously tugs at the heartstrings. The Littleton, Colo. native wears #13 in honor of the 13 Columbine High School victims. Spond attended Columbine and was in second grade at the time of the terrible school shooting in April 1999, so last month’s tragedy in Newtown, Conn. hit particularly close to home for the junior.

After a couple of days away from the practice field, all the Irish players were anxious to strap the pads back on and continue their preparation for Alabama.

During the afternoon, Notre Dame held its first on-site bowl practice at Doctors Hospital Training Facility, better known as the home base of the Miami Dolphins. Media members caught the first fifteen minutes or so of practice, before leaving the Irish to focus on the Crimson Tide.

ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit, Brent Musberger and Heather Cox, who will be calling the game on Monday night, took in practice as well, and caught up with a couple of players and coaches after the team was finished.
