Super Bowl Bound

Last year, Super Bowl XLVI featured a pair of Fighting Irish alums on opposing sides – Sergio Brown (’10) for the New England Patriots and Justin Tuck (’05) of the New York Giants.

For the second time in five season, Tuck and the Giants emerged victorious against the favored Patriots.

This year, there aren’t any Notre Dame connections on the Baltimore Ravens, but there are several members of the San Francisco 49ers organization with ties to the university.

The Niners roster includes defensive tackle Ian Williams (’11) and linebacker Darius Fleming (’12).

Fleming tore his ACL in the team’s minicamp, and has yet to make his professional debut. Williams, in his second NFL season, appeared in three games this year.

But the Irish connections go beyond the playing field for the NFC champions.

The front office is led by co-chairmen Denise DeBartolo York (’72 SMC) and John York (’71). Denise is the daughter of Edward J. DeBartolo Sr. (’32), for whom DeBartolo Hall is named. Her brother Edward J. DeBartolo Jr. (’68) is the former owner of the Niners.

Denise and John’s son, Jed York (’03) is the CEO.

If your team didn’t make it to the big game, and you’re still trying to decide who to root for in two weeks, maybe you can cheer for the Notre Dame family.
