Did The ‘Rudy’ Jersey Scene Really Happen?

If you watch Aaron Sorkin’s new HBO hit show, The Newsroom, you might have caught a few references to Rudy in Sunday night’s episode, “Amen.” Though I was not watching the episode, I noticed my Twitter timeline filled with mentions of the 1993 film.

This is actually not the first time Sorkin has alluded to Notre Dame in his writing. On The West Wing, a White House drama that ran from 1999 until 2006, President Josiah Bartlet was an ND graduate.

The Newsroom ‘recreates’ the famous scene where several players enter head coach Dan Devine’s office, leave their jersey on his desk, and ask that Rudy dress in their place for the final home game.

Among Irish fans, there has always been much confusion and debate as to whether that scene was true to life. In a little tease from the upcoming 125 Years of Notre Dame Football project, here’s an interview clip with former defensive tackle Nick Fedorenko (’76) talking more about that moment.
