Golson Named Starting QB

Aug 23, 2012, 6:50 PM EDT

The fans in Myrtle Beach, S.C. are celebrating tonight.

Head coach Brian Kelly met with the media after practice this evening and confirmed what was rumored all day on the Internet.

Sophomore Everett Golson will be the starting quarterback when the Fighting Irish take the field next week against Navy in Dublin, Ireland.

After much speculation throughout training camp, Kelly tabbed Golson as the opening day starter over junior Andrew Hendrix and freshman Gunner Kiel.

Golson did not see game action during the 2011 season, but was named Offensive Scout Team Player of The Year at December’s Notre Dame Football Awards Show. In April’s Blue-Gold Game, he completed 11 of 15 passes for 120 yards and two touchdowns.

Here’s a closer look, in Fighting Irish Digital Media’s 2012 spring game highlights.

In other news, Kelly also named freshmen Davonte’ Neal and KeiVarae Russell to the starting lineup, at punt returner and cornerback, respectively.
