Coach Kelly Announces 2012 Captains

Aug 28, 2012, 12:19 PM EDT

In a post-practice tweet yesterday evening, head coach Brian Kelly named four captains for the 2012 season.

At today’s press conference, Kelly spoke more about the four veteran leaders.

“What struck me more than anything else was when they got up before their teammates, and the things they said about being a captain at Notre Dame,” Kelly said.

The third-year Irish head coach noted that Kap was even brought to tears when addressing his teammates on what it meant to him to appointed as a captain.

While Martin, Eifert, Lewis-Moore and Te’o will serve as the 2012 captains, Kelly explained that there were several other seniors who were also deserving of such an honor.

Last season, safety Harrison Smith served as the team’s captain, with game day captains also being selected for each week.
